Banks are heading for the cashless society. It started with EFT-POS in NZ in September 1984, for those who remember, or in my case were involved.

Many retirees return to working out of boredom or not being able to survive on the measly pension.
I retired any years ago due to emphysema and more recently a lung cancer diagnoses.
Since then I had set up a foodbank at my own cost which I ran from home on behalf of my church but they wanted to use it only to help people within our church instead of anyone in need, so I closed it.
I then volunteered at another local foodbank for a while.
These days I grow fresh vegetables all year round to help people in need through a local charity PLUS I counsel victims of abuse and domestic violence FREE of charge.
But hey, this is nothing compared to the great work YOU are doing...Keep up the good work

I'm living in America, and it's almost on a daily basis, that a food sold in a grocery store or health food store is being recalled. For salmonella, etc. It just makes me wonder, why are so many foods being recalled, so often.. Are companies cutting costs, at our expense? And, have you ever been a victim of a food recalled product?

It depends on the award and how hard you worked for it. I was awarded the Howarth and Howath Prize (correct spelling) for Financial Management 3B. I had not studied economics or accounting in school and so picked it up at uni as a mature aged student. My closest challenger was a lad who was working for his dad's accounting business and was an entitled turd. I was working in the fishing industry at the time. We both went into the exam with a score of 96% and I scored 99% on my exam. I still smile at this because the students had no idea who I was and had their noses out of joint that their silver spoon boy didn't win. One for the working class!

Really?...I grew up in the suburbs of Brighton UK...we did high speed home made go-cart races down really steep hills...some tunneling and excavation work (luckily no-one died) and a wide series of tree platforms and stations that were made mostly with stolen scaffolding from local building sites...ah happy days...listening to the abuse from the builders below...when you had outrun them AND out climbed them AND they had given up chasing you!...(they were huge angry guys!) all the other things we are accused of doing I strongly deny...all that stuff with the buses and that one incident with the helicopter?...that wasn't us...it was probably other kids..and you cannot prove it...being a kid was SO much fun!

No, I'd switch. In fact I did switch and just as I was about to complete the forms the company I was with rang offering me the same deal, so I stayed where I was. I have been wondering about power companies lately because they charge so much but they all seem to be giving stuff away. Red Energy is giving Qantas Frequent Flyer points away to new customers, another company is giving a subscription to Netflix away to new customers, and tonight AGL is offering new customers the chance to win an EV. Why can't they stop the freebies and lower the prices?

I use CDs a lot when listening to music and cassette tapes when they were popular. Does anyone else use these still? What I liked about them was often the artwork on the covers and the tangible feel of them while listening to the music. It also brought a lot more money to the artist as buying the physical media went to them, more than streaming the music today. What are your thoughts on CDs, cassettes and Vinyl records?

For those of you shopping in Australia electricity cost has risen by 40% over the last two years because the Government is hell bent on going to renewable power generation and on last nights news they said it will go up at least 24% IN THE COMING YEAR. This drive to renewables is going to cost a fortune and it feeds through all levels of production. In Qld they just built a battery storage to capture home Solar generated power that would otherwise go to waste, it cost $200million and if called on in a blackout it will last from 2 - 4 hours and if not called on then if the batteries are charged then the power will still go to waste.
So maybe the Supermarkets are ripping us off but price increases are being fueled by this mad rush to renewables when there are much cheaper sources of power that don't only work when the sun shines or the wind blows. I'd like to mention that the two major Supermarkets are US owned, maybe we should think about getting them back into Australian hands. Your Superannuation, $4.5trillion is mostly invested in overseas countries, have you seen the movement in the $A v $US in the last week or so, almost a 4% improvement, that equates to a 4% loss in those funds?? could do much better here if we put our mind to it.

My favourite Christmas memory is the family Christmas Party. All my mother's family would get together the first Saturday of December. We would have a BBQ cooked by my uncle and pudding made by my nanna, Whoever found the penny got a prize. We would sit by the tree and my uncles would hand out the presents.

My young neighbour came round to ask if I had a Blower she could borrow to clear grass cuttings... I said no, but I had a broom she could use...she gave me a strange look...smiled and went away....she would be horrified to find nearly all my power tools have a long wire that you have to plug in to make them work...and manual tools that require no power at all...AND they all work fine and are easy to use.... But everything needs to "powered"...either a filthy 2 stroke...

In the case of what is potentially a domestic violence case, the police should have spoken to both parties. To not speak to the woman, just because the man seemed nice is gross misconduct. This is how people die at the hands of their partners, when the people that are there to protect you fail at doing their job. This is incomprehensible. Everyday in rich countries like Australia, we take water too much for granted. In times of drought we probably appreciate water more, when there is less rain. It is easy to not use water if you just think a bit. Yes, the makers of automatic dishwashers try to convince you that they use less water than Hand washing but then they would wouldn't they? They are trying to sell them. Do you really need to Pre-Rinse dishes before putting them into that Water and Energy sapping machine? Do you Really need to have your dishes sterilised? Do you really need to have them heated to boiling point to dry them? The answer is: NO. We wash our dishes ONCE a day, by hand and we use, at most 8 litres of water and enough Energy to have the Water at about 45C.

Well that can happen when the person is alive too. My Mum doesn't remember what she had for dinner the night before but remembers growing up during the war and being bombed out twice. Her short term memory is like non existent but she can still play a mean game of scrabble. Some times we don't listen to the important things because life gets busy or it not quite the right time, don't dwell on that. Mistakes happen and we have to get on with life but make sure you allow your self to grieve too. Go through his photos and remember him lovingly. After all he was your Dad. Don't hate a day because of the commercialism where it's all about spending money, Father's Day can mean so much more if you just put in a little imagination. Go for a picnic or have a nice lunch, go for a walk and reminisce the Dad you had. Sorry for your loss and he lived a long time and I am sure he had a great life. You are apart of his legacy. Remember him fondly in the things that make you unique.

Check the label! Here in Canada, the law says that the manufacturer must declare how flammable a garment is. Look for the fire code on the garment. I don't know where you are "hearing" all these complaints but they are quite probably bogus. What does a jacket have to do with someone going missing? If they had a different kind of jacket they would never, ever disappear? And "The Human Torch"? What was that person doing so carelessly around a fire in the first place?

Has anyone reused their clothes? An example is a jumper I do not care to wear out anymore, so I have decided to use it as a pyjama top because it is warmer than the original pyjama top. always recycle, reuse, pass to someone else. i do it with clothes, shoes and other things. while my recycling is not 100% i certainly try my best. i also use other, water system for bathroom, use recyclable kitchen towels in addition to my paper towels, to reduce my use of paper. i only buy clothes i know i need, use clothes i have until they need to be recycled. i donate ones that are still in good condition to people who may need them and cannot afford them, same with shoes. i do my best not to just throw things away. i am working towards minimalistic use of things in general but to be honest i find it challenging still.

In the freezer aisle at your local supermarket, is a bright, attractive box that contains fish in batter. Advantages are minimal in comparison to the disadvantages and we are seeing more of those occurring in the younger generation who have really only lived a digital existence. Social media has become the mum, dad, nanny and companion to many children who are unable to live without their smart phones and without their online "friends". But the Big Tech companies knew what they were doing when they developed these platforms and now you have SM like Tik Tok which is targeted at the below 18 years population and owned by a company run by the CCP, which fills me with confidence that they have our best interests at heart, and the algorithms are not just causing terrible addiction in this age group but the kids don't know that their brain chemistry is being changed and rerouted and they can no longer concentrate for more than a few minutes at a time. Their brains are still developing and I am strongly against social media for youth under 18 years old. But the worst part of social media is the "social contagion" aspect with the way it is redefining what gender means to children enmasse and the uptick in online bullying leading to more children than ever before suiciding because of bullying occurring outside of school and in their own homes. Just a couple of weeks ago a 10 year old child killed himself because of being bullied. As a child who was bullied badly at school in the 1970's and early 1980's I at least could get away from the bullies once I left school for the day. Social media has provided a way for bullies to have 24/7 access to their victims and that's just terrible! If you weigh up the negatives and positives of social media I don't think that the benefits outweigh the negative impact that it has had on us globally. The only people who truly benefit are the owners and shareholders of these massive corporations and the kids are suffering due to their power and global influence. I don't know how it's at your area where you're resident but at ours house's price increased 30% over the last 5 years, and it's estimated it's not gonna decline any time soon. House prices rise, but so do wages (and everything else). Many of the people who complain they can't afford a house are wasting piles of money on restaurant dining, overseas holidays, continually updating their tech gadgets and cars, TV subscriptions, etc. In ye olde days people actually saved money for a deposit and they made sacrifices to pay off the mortgage (and the mortgage was often for a lot longer than the 30 years people expect to pay it off now). Nothing has really changed, other than the attitude of people.
Having said that, prices are also artificially raised due to the greedy "investors" (local and non-resident) who buy multiple houses to rent out and/or do up and "flip" at a profit. If it had been illegal to own more than the one house you actually live in, house prices would be a lot lower.

I'm 60 this year. At work they call me "The Jedi. Not because I'm the oldest, which I am, but because I live in their words "the old ways." I don't own a smart phone, smart TV, 3-D printer or any of the other 100 things that this current generation thinks of as essential. I don't even own a credit card. I cut it up 20+ years ago when using it became too easy. I own my own house, plus an investment property, car, 2 investment Supers and $$$$ just sitting in my bank for an emergency. My co-workers are in their 30's to 40's and are in debt up to their eyeballs, living from payday to payday. They have all the latest gadgets but no real wealth at all. When I tell them this they just laugh at me. I had already owned my 1st home when I was their age. This generation is so hung up on the latest stuff and living "Now" on credit that by the time they retire they will still be renting. So yes, I don't like the future and technology. I am a Jedi/lol. But I'll tell you one thing...I'm happy that I'm the way I am. I'm worried about the current generation and their fixation on technology. All these easy options are keeping them poor and they can't see it cause everyone they know is doing the same thing. And they look at someone like me...laugh, and call me old.

I have received a message from my bank twice asking me if I had made a certain purchase on my credit card and both times it wasn't us. Somehow people have been able to get our credit card number but our beaut bank picked it up. The last one was a $4000 lunch. I contacted the restaurant asking them to report the fraud to the police but they said they were letting their bank handle it. I don't understand their attitude because if they didn't see the person ordering the food they must have delivered it, my bank stopped the purchase so why wouldn't they want to get their money back. I honestly believe that every city in the world should have a "Garage of Donations" (GOD) where everyone donates anything they don't use or want anymore, and where everyone who needs or wants those things should get them for FREE! Our Garage of Blessings is a recycle place where this is done. They run on donations, once a year sales to raise money, and volunteers who sort and put the items out in the building sorted by what it is. I have used and donated to them for almost 10 years. The whole concept of "good manners " went by the wayside when we lost the ability to punish our kids with a swift kick in the pants. The current generation have no respect at all. Rewarding phone use? That's subjective. If someone is in conversation with me, I expect their full attention. People in public? Well they're not disrespecting me personally, so I overlook that. Although hands-free calls can be annoying. I was visiting someone at a hospital a while back. I got into the lift with rather attractive doctor. As the doors closed she said, "Hi, how are you?" As there was no one else in the lift I said, "Good thanks." She, then stunned me by asking what I was doing on the weekend. I told her it depended on my wife. She then swung her eyes toward me and indicated that she was using a hands-free device. I was so embarrassed.

This really goes without saying, if you have a pet you must care for it properly. Failing to do tis is abuse and those people should be punished. I am not a pet owner or lover and I do think some people are nuts in the way they care for their animals, house pets that is , farm animals are different. Some people do treat their animals better than people, this to me in crazy and unnecessary. A couple of examples would be allowing you dog, for example, to share your bed. Sometimes sleeping between two people, or putting sweaters on dogs when they already have been evolved to handle the colder weather. here is another, someone I know lets the dog out to have a pee, when the dog reenters the house the "parents" wipe the dogs behind with a tissue. This behavior is over the top and these people should be in a rubber room somewhere!

Look I have nothing against gender equality, but when places promote or employ people based on gender or race just to tick an equality box requirement, rather than that person being actually qualified for a job then there's an issue. Thankfully my phone usually comes up with a potential scam warning. Most numbers are overseas numbers, Aussie usually. I don't usually answer calls from numbers I don't know, if it's important they will leave a message.
Emails are a bit easier to workout if a scam, claim to be from a genuine company, if in doubt always check the email address, usually a "mistake" in it.

So I have a daughter who worked at a warehouse in customer service. Her hours have been cut so low because she's not needed at the checkout since self service is available. As a matter of fact it's all self service there now. What do you think about machines taking over some people jobs? I find it quite frustrating

Should having a pet be a right as a tenant, within reason? I see more and more people being forced to give up family pets because no landlords allow them anymore, and I can t imagine how heartbreaking that must be.

I can't believe that we are having this topic again. It was already done within the last month.
In Australia, at least in Victoria, a landlord cannot refuse you on the basis of pets and nor can they kick you out if you get pets afterwards. I think that this is terrible as, at the end of the day, it is your house and your rules.
The other problem I have with it is many people that rent do not care about the property they rent to start with because it is not theirs and these type of people would allow pets to damage and destroy the house and the type of damage these tenants do, the bond is not enough to even pay for the materials needed to repair the property, much less any tradespeople to do the work.
The other issue I have is certain tenants are always behind on their rent and bills and will use pets as excuses on why they are behind. Even worse, they may not be able to afford to care for the pet (basic food and vet care) and this is abuse.
I am a pet owner but would never even think about having a pet unless I can afford it.

As a kid, fast food was a treat for me. Going to McDonald's for a happy meal was a treat. Every weekend maybe, but never every day. My question of the day is... how much is too much consumption of fast food? Can you make a balance of it? Is all consumption, no matter how much bad? What do you all think? I'm craving a Big Mac while typing this.

It\u2019s like most things eating it in moderation is ok. So once a week or fortnight as long as you aren\u2019t having huge portions of it. I\u2019m always shocked at school holidays seeing parents not only buy them mcds for lunch plus the soft serve ice cream plus the frozen fizzy drink. Way to much sugar!!

Criticism is envy, right? I get criticised so often by my "friends". I just really don't understand why people do this. It really brings me down. No matter what I say to them. It's outta envy, right?

If someone criticises another person it is usually because of some, rightly or wrongly, perceived failing in what that person does or says and most certainly not because they do or say something of which the critic is envious.
Maybe Its Time to have a good hard look at yourself and consider whether what you say or do is deserving of criticism or do you really think that every word you utter, ever thing you do is so perfect, so ideal it is all above criticism and that you and you alone are always in the Right!
If my friends criticse me I accept it and then check out if what I have said is wrong.

I remember 20 plus years ago when landlines were still common, getting phone calls in the evening to complete a survey. It would go on sometimes for a good half hour and they were not paid surveys. So if I get frustrated from screening out, I think of the phone surveys I did for free and at least the online surveys pay something lol. Does anyone still get contacted to do an unpaid telephone survey, or are they a thing of the past?

Did you ever stop and think that their son has anxiety or something else going on and he simply can't answer? The fact that you don't even think about why a person doesn't say hello back is rude in itself. Are you so self absorbed that that you think everyone just needs to behave the way you want them to? With so many streaming services and heaps of channels, I often don't know what to watch. Is there something you would recommend that's airing at the moment? I'm watching The last of Us on Foxtel, but it's limited episodes left. So needs some inspiration on what to watch next whether it be movies, TV series or a documentary series. I love them all. Has anyone ever noticed how the models in the anti aging cream ads don t look old enough to have wrinkles. When are the sponsors going to wake up to the fact that women of Australia are not stupid, only elderly women have wrinkles not 40-year-olds. If they want us to believe these ads, then use models of 60 + who would have wrinkles and see if these creams actually work, or maybe they don t want us to know the truth .

Silliest question ever. Of course they don't want us to know the truth. That's called MARKETING. And our skin has protective layers, and these creams can't even get to the layers that need restorative therapy in the first place. So disappointed in how the women of the world are so caught up in any fad, no matter the cost, to stay looking young. Hey, you!!!!!!! If you are old enough to have wrinkles, I'm smart enough to see them. No matter how much of that cream you put on everyday to make your insecure self feel "younger". My wife used to get swiss chocolates...and just give them to me...then slowly...because I ate them...I was supposed to like them, and everyone sent them to me... I had to recycle them....now I have a favourite whisky ... it isn't that expensive ... so everyone is buying me the special limited edition ... because it costs almost one third more ... and it is really horrible... Everyone is now sending me this one you don't want to sound ungrateful....what can I do?
