I'm almost 58 and my dad is 83 years old. I was emailing him on Monday and I told him how sorry I was that it was a very difficult day for him. You see it would have been my brother's 56th birthday except that he died 3 years ago in a car crash. As it was just my mum, dad, brother and myself growing up it is now only my dad and I who survive today as my mother passed away nearly 20 years ago. He said to me "Michelle, every day is a memory day". I told him that I'm finally old enough to understand that each day you find yourself reflecting on memories from the good, the bad and the ugly things that you've experienced in life and I find myself starting to play the "what if" game! What if I hadn't gone out to the disco and met the man who would have become my husband and the father of my children when I was supposed to be staying at a friend's house and not going out at all or what if I had been content to stay at the house my family had been living in, paid that mortgage off and reduced my full-time work to part-time and stayed home more often with my kids, instead of insisting that we renovate the home that I had inherited 75% of which was really my dream to do and to honour the memory of the ladies who gave it to me, but ultimately led to my husband going off with another woman he met while I was at work doing night shifts as an RN and then led to me ultimately having to walk away from and go bankrupt. I could do this all day but the nights are the worst. I don't think when I was younger that I could perceive of me at 57, hardly able to walk, with very little money and without an ability to do the things I used to love, including my job, and existing in constant pain. THIS me was abstract like a Picasso and bore no resemblance to who I am today and I think that we all reach a point in our lives where we can reflect on the good, the bad and the ugly and some of us can find peace in that, but I look back on my life, on my kids and EVERYTHING else and I ABSOLUTELY wish, with ALL my heart, that I hadn't ever been born! I lived in the country and I was not happier. Anytime we had any type of medical problem we had to travel for an hour for treatment. Anytime we wanted to shop in a large store we had to travel for an hour. Our fuel cost more as did many other things due to transport. We had 2 TV stations and one local radio station. There were far more drugs around than we ever saw in the big smoke and our children got a better education and better jobs. Even 20 years later our friends who remained there still had to travel for some medical appointments. The only thing we did miss was the beach and stopped going once we had moved. Far too many people at suburban beaches.

When I suggested this topic it was ignored. Perhaps it was the way I framed it. I am a cat person and while I have had dogs it's cats I can't live without. My 16 year old lady left us last September so I now only have 5 boys. They are all rescues so come with health problems but I love them, not like children but family members who are animals. My one rule is that they don't have human names, and I never use the same name twice, the name also has to suit the personality. All 5 have long fur which annoys my husband as he feels they shed, they don't really as they usually leave it on chairs or clothing. I have always had at least one cat other than when I lived overseas. All of the cats has it's own personality and all 5 own me. They are neurotic, bossy, fussy but love unconditionally and get very annoyed if we go away for any reason. They are very independent, dogs are far too needy for my liking, but they know if I'm not feeling well and will stay with me even if they have to hiss and growl at anyone that attempts to get closer. They help me garden, they always want to go with me when I walk and will hide so that I can't see them until they get frightened by a car or dog and I hear them crying. I had to carry one home from almost a block away one day and the bus scared him so much he almost got away from me. They are sticky beaks who have to know where I am at all times. They help me when I'm sewing or making the bed, oh that's great fun, they also enjoy a feather duster, getting into drawers, cupboards and washing baskets. I was missing one once and looked everywhere for him but I was pretty sure he hadn't left home. The following morning I turned the dryer on to air my towels and I heard a loud banging and when I looked his little face was looking through the dryer door at me. He had gotten in while I left the dryer open as I took the towels off the clothesline the previous afternoon. I hugged him so hard as it could have ended quite badly and he was very forgiving but hungry. Ny eldest son keeps birds and doesn't like cats, he says they are sneaky, my daughter has no pets but prefers dogs while my youngest son must take after me and has 5 cats. My grandchildren call me the crazy cat lady but they all love my cats. The feeling sadly is not reciprocated.

We had a brand new house we rented to a couple with 2 children for 4 years while we did our trip around Australia and I would never rent any thing again. The amount the real estate said was normal wear and tear was just total BS. Who can blow up an oven in 4 years? Tried to fix the water tank after their puppy chewed the wires, totally failed to any way. So with short term rentals I think the damage could be worse and I would never do that because there is no respect for other peoples belongings. Use and abuse then some of the better tenants are tarred with the same brush. Like most things there is always some one whom will spoil it for every one else. I read about a couple with 2 children and another on the way having to live in a tent because there aren't any rentals available in their area. It's sad and temporary housing needs to be arranged for these people. As much as I wouldn't rent any thing again surely there are others that would. Some are selling up as interest rates rise and this will only add to the problem but then a first home buyer gets a chance to buy. Rent is dead money so if the younger ones can buy it is better but then are they still going to be around that area in 3 or 4 years? It's a hard one that is for sure.

I have accepted many stray cats over the years. They keep me sane, make me laugh and have different personalities. As long as the child does his or her own homework. Often I found parents had done the homework for the child, and what is the point of that. Homework is a valuable way to practice skills learned in class. If the child can't do the homework, the parent should inform the teacher so those skills can be revised until the child is able to do the work independently. Also, I agree that excessive homework is not good - a maximum of half an hour should be long enough for primary school students.

I am alone and have depression and anxiety and no family. I do what I want when I want, but that doesn't fit into society. I might go to bed at 10 p.m. or 5 a.m. and sleep most of the day. I try to get my meds on time and eat once in a while. I hate routines. They were not made for me, but my counselors have been fighting me for years to get into a routine. If I'm happy, the world will have to adjust to MY schedule!

We need to bring back the Technical Colleges we used to have that taught young people who preferred to work with their hands parallel with High Schools where young people's capabilities belong in the academic arena. I believe it is a waste of money. I know someone who spends $30 a week and others even more. Calculate that over a year and that could go towards a holiday or something you might need in the house. I prefer to work for what I have and manage my own expenses. Sometimes money can bring more issues than it is worth.

I think that less funding should be given to private schools and hospitals should have adequate equipment and hospital beds especially when COVID-19 is still an issue. I had a flu and was cough and can't to work in the pass. I had a boss them made to take to management why i was sick they tell me you needed to go to work. So my father made each time go to work. I have not had an alcohol drink in over a year. As I have coeliac disease I am reluctant to have any thing. I do feel like some now and again but walking the dog helps to relax me so I do not need alcohol. $600 is a lot of money on alcohol. You could save that money and when lock down eases you could go on holiday. I also feel that the preservative in alcohol is not good for our body.

There was a discussion on the radio the other day about kids "wanting" to do various activities, the parents paying for it, and then the kid quickly pulling out again ... sports, dancing, scouts / girl guides, horse riding, etc. Before paying any full term / year fees (often non-refundable because you're taking up a spot and the classes cannot start again to catch-up a later fill-in), you should find somewhere that either offers pay-per-lesson prices or even gives a free trial. That way you can find out if the kids *really* wants to do it or not before paying out huge piles of money.

We moved to a rural property - a year ago tomorrow, actually - and since then I have grown potatoes, kumara (sweet potatoes for those outside NZ), NZ yams, carrots, cauli, broccoli, capsicums, corn, onions (red and brown), spring onions, pumpkins, beans, snowpeas (mange tout), leeks, cabbages (red and savoy), spinach, silverbeet, swede, daikon radish, beetroot, garlic, rhubarb, courgettes (zucchini), several varieties of tomatoes and herbs and attempted eggplant (aubergine) but was unsuccessful with those as I planted them too late in the season. We have also harvested feijoas, lemons, limes, mandarins and peaches from trees that were already established on the property. We also have chickens for eggs. I have made several batches of pasta sauce, tomato relish, peach jam, onion marmalade and feijoa chutney. I also make my own Irish soda bread, naan bread and focaccia. We are loving the flavours of fruit and veges fresh from the garden and are looking to add more gardens so we can grow more produce.

It's like everything else in nature, it changes. Some years we have lots of snow or frosty mornings. Some years we have lots of rain. Years of droughts and years of floods. Look back at history and you'll see Egypt had droughts then floods. It's just a natural cycle. However, when it comes to damage that is purely due to population. We have always had hail storms. I have photo's of me as a child holding huge hail stones, but back then there wasn't much damage. About 6 years ago a hail storm went through and our house fared pretty well but a new suburb that had just popped up and had 4 houses per quarter acre instead of 1 copped it badly. All you could see was blue tarps over roofs, and they were there for months with not enough tradesman and insurance companies trying to assess the damage. The storm was no worse than usual but there were far more homes than previously.

Embarrasing..i was rushing to get a workvisit kit and left the Hospital car with the brake off- came back and it had rolled into a handrail. ThankGod it didn't hit anyone. Also left handbrake off when rushing our newborn pups into vets for checkup. Dented car and didn't want to tell hubby and managed to sneak it to panelbeaters and get it back next day fixed without him knowing. Er there's been a few other handbrake incidents too. I try to avoid parking on hills or slopes these days.

As a motorbike rider, all drivers are the devil to me/us.. I am highly trained and always ride within my limits. I ride to the conditions. If I overtake or pass, I do it quickly and with great thought. I do not want to be anywhere near cars or trucks. Of couse this is said in hindsight, but bike riders know what I am talking about.

All these rap songs are so hard to understand or full of anger or foul language. Some may like it but who remembers any of these so called songs. They are almost always wrong. My dogs actually act funny right before we get the bad weather, as of lately I tend to depend on my dogs for bad weather. Weather stations are usually way off or the weather starts before their predictions.

This is probably off the subject, but I have a theory. lol When we went into lock down the air became cleaner (fewer cars on the road) and there was less rubbish around town. The birds started chirping around 4am every day (I wasn't the only one that noticed this). So now I feed the wild birds...well not so wild if you count the crows that call for me at my front door. I like to look after the crows because they are Aboriginal talismans...bossy bums lol I also feed a variety of other wild birds seagulls,wattle birds, different parrots etc. Nothing goes to waste. People probably think I am weird putting a fresh container of water and food scraps on my front lawn every day...but they clean it all up everyday LOL

it is our perception of time that changes. you feel time is "flying by" as you get older. go back to your early years, ie about 6 to 10 years of age. your birthday, christmas, school holidays, easter, they all seemed to take forever to get there. it is all your age perception. ask a person in a convalescent home who lay in bed all day, bet their time goes very slowly

Ha no. I remember doing all those life skills at school, but it still didn't compromise on other subjects. The amount of teens and adults I've worked with in recent years who can't do basic maths in their heads to work out the correct change to give was beyond shocking. I see that as (what should be) primary school level. I think that needs to be addressed. Also all the short hand texting is not helping with spelling and grammar.

I worked in a Nursing Home, where I witnessed an AIN pushing over a resident, calling him a stupid old man. I went straight to the Deputy to report it. She told me that I should be nice to this girl, because she was having a hard time at home. I was absolutely shocked that this could not only happen, but there were zero repercussions for someone who was supposed to be giving care to the frail, elderly residents.

During cold weather my knees ache. Rarely both and walking is painful. I usually put on the stretch supports and this helps. Yet this cold weather my knees are fine. I have had one dry eye for a year now. I have tried many drops. Just recently I tried another more intensive drops recommended by the Pharmacist. I thought this is great my first night went very well. Next night I awoke with the same problem. Not as bad but who knows tonight. It is horrible when the whole eyelid sticks to the whole eye ball. Scary especially when it impairs your vision. Getting old is not pleasant.

Now they are going to ban Vapes which are giving people the chance to come off cigarettes to vapes. I was a smoker for many years and thanks to Vapes I have weaned myself off nicotine after only 3 years of vaping. I still vape but use no nicotine in the liquid.

Investigate Suzy. Could be a factory near by. It could be anything? See if other people in your community or neighbourhood are noticing the same smell. Once you can identify where the smell is coming from, then you can contact your local council & see if they can do anything about fixing the problem. Good luck in your investigation Suzy.

How can something "LIve" be dead? When we first got our TV, in the olden days, mainly used it for entertainment ie watching the flicks. It is not a member of our family like pets are. It is our servant to meet are needs which is not as luxurious as some. hank goodness for free to air it still serves us well.

We both worked til I decided to chuck in my job because I was sick of daycare spending more time with the kids than us. I was also earning more as a labourer than my partner in the foundry. I never wanted a night out clubbing and he stopped going to his Friday nights out with the boys after work. It wasn't about us anymore but our boys so our social lives were irrelevant. And he may wear the pants in the house but I'm the one that buys them! Lol!

It can be good for your security but it can also be highly invasive. Care needs to be taken with your liberty. On a lighter side one time when we were in a holiday home my friends wife was on dinner duty when the power failed and the stove went off, she said bugger and just put it in the microwave....AND??? Lol.... I laughed so much she biffed a sausage at me. Too much reliance on modern technology can be hazardous...lol

I can remember the feeling of satisfaction when we used to get paid in cash, kept a little for expenses, train or bus fares lunch money and paid board and the rest got put in the bank and it stayed in the bank. None of this direct deposit and losing track of how much gets withdrawn bit by bit for all and sundry to track where you spent what. I only use PayPal to receive survey payments and am quick to transfer it to a real bricks and mortar bank account. Don't like the way the banking system is heading with all the online no face to face person contact ... not knowing who of what purpose your money is being used as it accumulates a pitance in interest.

Stay home with your children, live within your means. If we didn’t try to keep up with joneses, appreciated the way our parents bought us up and appreciated that time that you miss from putting your children in care. Before you know it they are gone and you’re an empty nester. Why have children if you’re not going to nurture, and spend those precious years with them

It's what I call the 'kicking the dog' principle. If they are having a bad day, they'll take it out on whoever is nearby. I didn't work retail, but I worked a job as a cleaner during day hours. I encountered a lot of rude, nasty people. Just consider the source.

Just a thought, how many of you regularly check the air pressure in your spare tyre. A flat spare is the same as no spare..!!

Food is tastiest when in season (that is why there are seasons). Preserving was invented so we could have fruit and vegetables out of season/stock up for winter/not waste a good growing season. I believe lots of gut issues and intolerances go further back than just today's preservatives. Best health information is, and always has been "eat everything in moderation". Unfortunately, when women are pregnant, they are told by "experts" not to eat this or that while they are pregnant and this is the first stop to helping the eliminated food become recognised as an allergen to the immune system of the forming foetus. These people then "breast feed" for the best of their child but still eliminate these foods for health reasons so, by the time the food is introduced to the child, the child's natural immune response is "this should not be in my body and needs to be attacked" (allergic reaction)

It’s OK but what they really need to work on is removing surveys that have been completed or disqualified

Tobacco and Alcohol do more damage but collect a lot of taxes - at least you'll get the tax going to the govt. instead of drug dealers. It is a complicated issue and deserves more than just a simple yes or no.
