My trip to Hawaii was cancelled last year and I do want to go while I am still young enough to drag my bag behind me but there will need to be next to no Covid out there. I don't want to go anywhere that requires sticking a stick up my nose, and I don't want to have to wear a mask, quarantine in my room for even one day and I certainly don't want to end up in a hospital in a foreign country. So no overseas travel for me for sometime yet.

I am in my 70's and we had it back when I was a teen. I started work at just turned 15 and I paid for my clothing, transport, board, health care etc. At 21 if you were not married you were being talked about as being left on the shelf. Always been pressure put on everyone but the trick is to ignore the pressure and live your life as best you can with a good conscience, respect for family and yourself and never let friends influence you in ways that are not healthy. These days I think people should put their phones down and start talking to people. Influencers as they are called are just wanna be's who really do not know much anyway but seem to get a following and many become quite rich because of this so called fame. It used to be called keeping up with the Jones's back in my day and that was something I never aspired to. I still don't. There will always be someone prettier, have a better figure, be taller, have a better car, house, job etc. I guess you have to learn to be satisfied with what you have and improve it if you wish by common sense approaches.

I had 5 children who are now aged between 28 and 39. When they were growing up I and my now ex husband had his Italian father living with us. He had worked so hard all his life after being a prisoner of war in WW2 and became medically retired by the time my eldest daughter was born and she is now 35. Because his wife abandoned him AND the 2 children who were 3 and 5 at the time and there wasn't a pension available for him to recieve in order to be able to keep his family together, the children stayed with grandparents and great grandparents on their mothers side, and sometimes in the Catholic orphanages which were very cruel as was their maternal GM. By the time I met my children's father at age 15 Giuseppe would leave at 4:30 am and bot arrive back until about 6pm at night and then go to bed and start all over again. I mention this because it's important to the story. I didn't fully realise until about 20 years ago when I gained a little perspective and started to head into my 40's just what a wonderful man I'd been blessed to know. As I had more children my FIL would do the laundry, being fully retired now, the cooking, a lot of the cleaning and garden maintenance, including having a large vegetable garden that fed us fresh vegetables. Because of this being waited on hand and foot my children didn't learn to do the chores which I had learned to do, without argument, since I was a very young child. I am not lying but stating a truth that my husband grew up very lazy and unmotivated and this, combined with their grandfathers constant help, prevented my children from developing a disciplinet hat I had in spades having come from a typical nuclear family of the 1960's with traditional gender roles. My children have however developed their own discipline and now are functioning members of society and appreciate just what a blessing they did have growing up with a grandparent living with them. Giuseppe too got what HE wanted: :a family with children he could help raise and be at home with to watch them grow! My children talk about their grandfather often and his ashes sit not 2 feet from where I write this in bed having lost him at age 97 3 years ago. But children enjoy getting mum a nappy or "folding" up a face washer or carrying swmething for whatever parent is taking care of the child at the time. I think that less funding should be given to private schools and hospitals should have adequate equipment and hospital beds especially when COVID-19 is still an issue. I had a flu and was cough and can't to work in the pass. I had a boss them made to take to management why i was sick they tell me you needed to go to work. So my father made each time go to work. I have not had an alcohol drink in over a year. As I have coeliac disease I am reluctant to have any thing. I do feel like some now and again but walking the dog helps to relax me so I do not need alcohol. $600 is a lot of money on alcohol. You could save that money and when lock down eases you could go on holiday. I also feel that the preservative in alcohol is not good for our body.

Too many apartment buildings going up in our area. We are close to the city and now the lovely old houses that are on larger blocks being torn down to replace with ugly apartment buildings. They will never last as long as these houses have and what is even harder to take is that all the lovely old trees are being cut down. It will soon be a concrete jungle. These buildings de-humanise the area and within a short time look dirty and shabby.

It's like everything else in nature, it changes. Some years we have lots of snow or frosty mornings. Some years we have lots of rain. Years of droughts and years of floods. Look back at history and you'll see Egypt had droughts then floods. It's just a natural cycle. However, when it comes to damage that is purely due to population. We have always had hail storms. I have photo's of me as a child holding huge hail stones, but back then there wasn't much damage. About 6 years ago a hail storm went through and our house fared pretty well but a new suburb that had just popped up and had 4 houses per quarter acre instead of 1 copped it badly. All you could see was blue tarps over roofs, and they were there for months with not enough tradesman and insurance companies trying to assess the damage. The storm was no worse than usual but there were far more homes than previously.

In the 1950s and 60s we used to listen to the Saturday football (what is now AFL) on the radio. We thought all our Christmases had come at once when it was played – of course in black and white - on television.

Embarrasing..i was rushing to get a workvisit kit and left the Hospital car with the brake off- came back and it had rolled into a handrail. ThankGod it didn't hit anyone. Also left handbrake off when rushing our newborn pups into vets for checkup. Dented car and didn't want to tell hubby and managed to sneak it to panelbeaters and get it back next day fixed without him knowing. Er there's been a few other handbrake incidents too. I try to avoid parking on hills or slopes these days.

As a motorbike rider, all drivers are the devil to me/us.. I am highly trained and always ride within my limits. I ride to the conditions. If I overtake or pass, I do it quickly and with great thought. I do not want to be anywhere near cars or trucks. Of couse this is said in hindsight, but bike riders know what I am talking about.

This is probably off the subject, but I have a theory. lol When we went into lock down the air became cleaner (fewer cars on the road) and there was less rubbish around town. The birds started chirping around 4am every day (I wasn't the only one that noticed this). So now I feed the wild birds...well not so wild if you count the crows that call for me at my front door. I like to look after the crows because they are Aboriginal talismans...bossy bums lol I also feed a variety of other wild birds seagulls,wattle birds, different parrots etc. Nothing goes to waste. People probably think I am weird putting a fresh container of water and food scraps on my front lawn every day...but they clean it all up everyday LOL

The amount of teens and adults I've worked with in recent years who can't do basic maths in their heads to work out the correct change to give was beyond shocking. During cold weather my knees ache. Rarely both and walking is painful. I usually put on the stretch supports and this helps. Yet this cold weather my knees are fine. I have had one dry eye for a year now. I have tried many drops. Just recently I tried another more intensive drops recommended by the Pharmacist. I thought this is great my first night went very well. Next night I awoke with the same problem. Not as bad but who knows tonight. It is horrible when the whole eyelid sticks to the whole eye ball. Scary especially when it impairs your vision. Getting old is not pleasant.

I stock up on non-perishables at sale time. I've never paid full price for hair colour or washing detergent: I wait until they're on sale for 50% off, then buy two or three packs. I buy new boots at the end of winter sales & sandals & swimwear at the end of summer. I'm more concerned about comfort & quality than the latest fashions. For larger items like furniture, I wait until post-Xmas or end of financial year sales. I also sew a lot of my own clothes - that saves a LOT!

Now they are going to ban Vapes which are giving people the chance to come off cigarettes to vapes. I was a smoker for many years and thanks to Vapes I have weaned myself off nicotine after only 3 years of vaping. I still vape but use no nicotine in the liquid.

We need to bring back the Technical Colleges we used to have that taught young people who preferred to work with their hands parallel with High Schools where young people's capabilities belong in the academic arena. Australia should be concentrating on advancing the schooling needs of our own young people and not investing in the education of overseas students who either go back and take their knowledge to their own country or stay and soak up the employment here leaving our qualified brilliant young people to what? Go on the pathetic dole and be labelled "dole bludgers". We need to think smart, act smart and we will have our own smarter home grown workforce. Keep it simple and keep it here.

We both worked til I decided to chuck in my job because I was sick of daycare spending more time with the kids than us. I was also earning more as a labourer than my partner in the foundry. I never wanted a night out clubbing and he stopped going to his Friday nights out with the boys after work. It wasn't about us anymore but our boys so our social lives were irrelevant. And he may wear the pants in the house but I'm the one that buys them! Lol!

I believe it is a waste of money. I know someone who spends $30 a week and others even more. Calculate that over a year and that could go towards a holiday or something you might need in the house. I prefer to work for what I have and manage my own expenses. Sometimes money can bring more issues than it is worth.

I can remember the feeling of satisfaction when we used to get paid in cash, kept a little for expenses, train or bus fares lunch money and paid board and the rest got put in the bank and it stayed in the bank. None of this direct deposit and losing track of how much gets withdrawn bit by bit for all and sundry to track where you spent what. I only use PayPal to receive survey payments and am quick to transfer it to a real bricks and mortar bank account. Don't like the way the banking system is heading with all the online no face to face person contact ... not knowing who of what purpose your money is being used as it accumulates a pitance in interest.

If we didn’t try to keep up with joneses, appreciated the way our parents bought us up and appreciated that time that you miss from putting your children in care. Food is tastiest when in season (that is why there are seasons). Preserving was invented so we could have fruit and vegetables out of season/stock up for winter/not waste a good growing season. I believe lots of gut issues and intolerances go further back than just today's preservatives. Best health information is, and always has been "eat everything in moderation". Unfortunately, when women are pregnant, they are told by "experts" not to eat this or that while they are pregnant and this is the first stop to helping the eliminated food become recognised as an allergen to the immune system of the forming foetus. These people then "breast feed" for the best of their child but still eliminate these foods for health reasons so, by the time the food is introduced to the child, the child's natural immune response is "this should not be in my body and needs to be attacked" (allergic reaction)

Tobacco and Alcohol do more damage but collect a lot of taxes - at least you'll get the tax going to the govt. instead of drug dealers. It is a complicated issue and deserves more than just a simple yes or no.

We moved to a rural property - a year ago tomorrow, actually - and since then I have grown potatoes, kumara (sweet potatoes for those outside NZ), NZ yams, carrots, cauli, broccoli, capsicums, corn, onions (red and brown), spring onions, pumpkins, beans, snowpeas (mange tout), leeks, cabbages (red and savoy), spinach, silverbeet, swede, daikon radish, beetroot, garlic, rhubarb, courgettes (zucchini), several varieties of tomatoes and herbs and attempted eggplant (aubergine) but was unsuccessful with those as I planted them too late in the season. We have also harvested feijoas, lemons, limes, mandarins and peaches from trees that were already established on the property. We also have chickens for eggs. I have made several batches of pasta sauce, tomato relish, peach jam, onion marmalade and feijoa chutney. I also make my own Irish soda bread, naan bread and focaccia. We are loving the flavours of fruit and veges fresh from the garden and are looking to add more gardens so we can grow more produce.
